Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teen years, and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford made an application for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. However, she made her television debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
