O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a diploma from Wheaton-North High School. Before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady started her career by modeling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later a regular character in ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included TV shows, independent movies, and several other shows. Her first major role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the team's big-haired secretary on ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 until 1996. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actress in the Drama Series. The ensemble and O'Grady were awarded an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance in an Drama Series Ensemble for 1995.
