O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a diploma from Wheaton-North High School. Before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady started her career by modeling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials.
